Exploring the Student Administration Potential of Apple’s iPad: A Proof of Concept

If there’s one tech device in 2010 that has made a significant impact on the landscape of our culture, it’s Apple’s iPad. Announced in January, speculation ran wild for months as to what users could expect from the device. It was an immediate hit upon launch in April, with one million iPads sold in just 28 days.

While it has incredible appeal as a consumer electronics device (nothing beats iPad Scrabble), educators and administrators immediately began contemplating the potential uses for the classroom. At SunGard Public Sector, we were eager to develop real-world use cases that would allow us to demonstrate our products being used on the iPad. Thanks to the hard work of our developers, we were able to get our products up on the iPad in a matter of days.

This video demonstrates the impact that SunGard Public Sector’s solutions for K-12 education can have when deployed on a mobile device. Feel free to offer your comments and questions below.

The more times I use my iPad the less I find myself utilizing my PC. This thing does everything I require it to and it’s a blast to use. I’m wondering if the ipad 64 is faster than my 32?

Introducing the iPAD in our schools would be woderful. This would especially benefit Special Education teachers because of the IEP plus gives them access to each students IEP in hand instead of them pulling folders.Being able to check attendance and student progree from anywhere, if at a meeting, on a field trip, or even at home is great. The ipad also would help our Administrators who are “on the go”. This is great. Hopefully more systems will catch the wave.

I have an ipad and I use eSchool on it all the time, I noticed that in the demo there was an app for eSchool that made the eSchool screen look different and more ipad friendly, is there a way I can get this app?

Our district uses eSchool on the iPad, but it is via the add on module to eSchool called Mobile Access Center. It is a scaled down version of eSchool. Assistant Principals, etc really like it because they can walk around with their iPad and if they find students in the hall, they can pull them up, see their picture, their schedule, or even call their parents on the spot. The contact info for the student is an active link and if you download the ipad app call iCall, you can call the parent directly from your iPad (given a wireless connection to the internet).
