Replace an archaic student information system with one that connects teachers, students, and parents with data that supports student achievement.
Indian Prairie School District 204’s Story of Success
“At the time, the system was something that met the needs. But, it had become very limiting in terms of contemporary reporting capabilities and its ability to integrate with other systems,” says Stan Gorbatkin, assistant superintendent of technology services.
A Search with High Expectations
According to Gorbatkin, the district began its search for a new student information system with high expectations.
Indian Prairie sought a system with robust functionality—one that featured an integrated gradebook, offered flexible reporting and scheduling options, and provided user-friendly access to parents. The district also wanted an integrated special education management system for efficiently handling the entire special education process.
Most importantly, though, Indian Prairie wanted to partner with a software solutions vendor with a focus on K-12 education—one that was attuned to the ever-changing needs of school districts and was committed to adapting and advancing its administrative software to meet those needs.
“We evaluated a number of products, and our decision came down to overall balance and strength across all of the areas,” Gorbatkin explains. “We wanted a software solution that was aligned with current needs and would keep evolving.”
Investing in SunGard K-12 Education
After thoroughly considering its options, Indian Prairie chose SunGard K-12 Education’s eSchoolPLUS student information system and IEPPLUS special education management system. With one of every six students nationwide being served by SunGard K-12, Gorbatkin noted the company’s depth “was a significant factor in the district’s decision-making.”
eSchoolPLUS is a recognized industry-leading student information system. It has received Gartner’s highest possible rating and was named to District Administration’s Top 100 products list. A cost-effective software solution, eSchoolPLUS helps educators manage day-to-day student administration, monitor student performance, and facilitate communication between district staff, parents, and students.
IEPPLUS, which seamlessly integrates with eSchoolPLUS, facilitates all aspects of the special education process—from referral, evaluation, and individualized education plan (IEP) development to maintaining historical information and ensuring compliance with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations. The system offers intuitive web-based forms to increase the speed and ease of creating IEPs. It also alleviates administrative burdens and helps improve the accuracy of reporting with automated compliance validation and automated notifications to alert district staff of critical information or actions needed.
Both products are part of SunGard K-12’s PLUS 360 suite, an integrated suite of software solutions for managing student information, assessment and curriculum, special education, and financial and human resources. The suite can be deployed together or implemented as powerful, best-of-breed systems.
Making a Smooth Transition
With the decision-making behind them, Indian Prairie recently made a smooth transition to PLUS 360. In reflecting on the implementation, Gorbatkin touts SunGard K-12’s understanding of the customer.
“SunGard’s customer support is very strong,” he says. “Obviously every implementation is different and we’re a pretty large district, so we needed to reach out and rely on SunGard folks for support. Their technical expertise and knowledge of the product are strengths. And, they understand our sense of urgency.”
Gorbatkin says the response throughout the district has been positive.
“We’ve gotten good feedback on the capabilities of the product. Parents, teachers, support staff, administrators, and others who support student learning really have enjoyed seeing the robust functionality and the real-time information about students,” says Gorbatkin. “The system is intuitive for the users. It has really good advanced search capabilities and flexibility in manipulating and accessing data.”
With increased functionality, the possibilities for the district are greatly expanded.
“Our staff’s eyes have really been opened in terms of what a robust student information system can do,” he says. “We definitely have more information at the fingertips of more staff. It really helps support student learning.”
